Shane Skillz: the abyss gazes into thee.
On Australia Day in 2009, The Enthusiast invites all true Aussies to help usher in a new dawn for homegrown hip-hop. Far from the humiliations of appropriating American gangsta posturing or emulating the tiresome earnestness of Australian barbecue rap, a fresh voice emerges from the local hip-hop scene and his name is Skillz. Shane Skillz.
As Keats wrote in the immortal Ode To A Grecian Urn, “‘Beauty is truth, truth beauty’ – that is all ye know on earth, and all ye need to know.” Shane Skillz is that truth, you little beauty. He is a truth about Australia and the truth about ourselves. His stark falsetto pierces our very preconceptions of Australian identity. Shane Skillz holds a mirror up to monocultural society. You can take the boy out of Broady but you can’t take Broady out of the boy.
His sense of cultural identity is laid bare in ‘I.F.R.C.’, defiantly proclaiming “I fuckin’ represent, don’t fuck with me/ I fucken represent, cunts”. A Ned Kelly figure emerges in his opus ‘Taggin’, goading oppressors via the individual expression inherent in writing graffiti. Complex cross-generational sexual politics are frankly explored in ‘Ah Yeah’, Skillz revealing about his friend’s mother: “It doesn’t matter that she’s nearly 50 / She came in the dunny and gave me a wristie”. He challenges the government’s stance on decriminalisation of marijuana in new dub-infused joint ‘Mole’, insisting, “Smoking bongs is fucken guaranteed to make you smarter”.
In his first interview, and an Enthusiast exclusive, we explore the psyche of the most authentic rapper to ever emerge from Australia’s atrophied hip-hop underground.
We know you are a proud resident of Broadmeadows, but can you tell us a little more about your origins?
“i was born in 1994 my mum had me when she was 18 my old man left a couple years later and went to the gold coast to do some big deal or some bullshit and never came back. my moms side is irish she rekons were related to ned kelly. ive lived in broadie since i was born so thats why i represent broady for life n that.”
What exactly do you represent? Is it cunt?
“nah. i represent just means i say what i reckon and i dont take shit from no cunts. not big cunts. not famous cunts. not even fucken kevin rudd that cunt.”
What events have been delaying your dope forthcoming album, Shane Skillz Dope Album?
“fucken dramas mate. firstly screwies dogshit computer crashed an we lost the first beats n that. then i met these cunts at a workshop and they sed they would sign me on there label n that. they just fucked me round n that i reckon the music industry is fucked like it says in all the songs. so now im puttin my own shit up on my page for free n that.”
How did you discover DJ Screwy, and how much collaboration goes into the beats?
“screwies a sick cunt. i met him at school cos he went in the talent show and brung his mums terntable and done some skratches n that. every cunt was booing him and shit but i thought it was fucken grouse and i asked him to do some cuts n that and then we made i fucken represent cunt an he done them mad scratches n that. screwy didnt make the beats on the album but. i got em off a cunt called tommy beats who is an older cunt who works in the broady shoppin center.
Comments on your MySpace are wildly polarised. To what do you attribute this?
“some cunts are just mongs and mostly i reckon they get heaps jealous they go yore a fucken faggot youve got a gay voice and shit i dont give a fuck i fucken go on their myspace and their got like only ten friends an a picture of them playin rugby or some homo shit i just fucken burn em mate. lately but theirs been heeps of people given me props aye. heeps of hottees even from oversees like canada and shit so i reckon the new music goes alrite aye!”
Where do you feel you fit in the sphere of Australian hip-hop?
“im the best cunt in it.”
Tell us about your musical heroes.
“i like all the good cunts you would expect like fiddy cent and lil wayne and them. i also like old skool cunts like eminem and snoop and that. in australia i reckon chopper and eddy maguires are grouse cunts. i reckon emo music is retarded.”

Is there a reason for your continuing anonymity?
“wtf i had to get screwy to explain me that qwestion. i keep it on the low cos of all the taggin and shit. we neerly got done by the piggers for graffin up a few weeks ago. i dont wanna get famous and then get done for graffin cos me rap name and me tag are the same so i just try to stay underground an that. its not worth gettin arseraped by some hairy crim cunt for.”
‘Ah Yeah’ reveals a predilection for mature women. What do you look for in a woman?
“lolz. wot r u a uni student r somethin? its not really about that. Its like did you ever stay over at yore mates and his mum was tryna touch yer balls n that? i would like a chick thats like 18 so she can buy goon n that and who likes gangsta rap and gives mad blowies n that.”
Many rappers trade on their criminal record. Can you explicate your own, aside from criminal damage described in ‘Taggin’?
“lolz i reckon crime is grouse. i snaffled a pushbike out of this cunts front yard a little while ago and me an screwy like to go swipe shit from the shopz pretty offen. i have also bashed the fuk out of a few cunts in my time plus i fucken deel mole like its goin out of fashion n that but wilfull damage is definitly the best fun.”
Do your schoolmates appreciate your rhymes?
“nah. i got beef with most cunts at school. i didnt go much this year and i pretty much failed n that. most of the teachers are deadshits I reckon you can drop out of school and get famous for music pretty easily nowerdays anyhow.”
What has been your career highlight so far?
“gettin heaps of hottees sayin they wanna have my babies n that is pretty awesome but gettin i fucken represent cunt played on triple j was the best. i reckon maya jupiters is a deadset moistee.”
